Learn how to party comp, equip the right trinkets, make sure you are equiping the right attacks and camp skills, make sure you are well provisioned, make sure your heroes quirks match the dungeon you're going into, make sure you can hit all the ranks, move economy is everything so make sure you are stunning/DOTing, research the boss, etc, etc."

Keep in mind that DLC can be activated at any time, and even though the Crimson Court questline is a rough addition early game for someone that never played base before, you can still activate the new class (however nerfed) and Districts in advance of that. Is that something we should work at not holding againt him? ) Anyway, OP, I agree that the base game by itelf is the way to go, though I think that if you do like it, picking up the DLC's later adds not just a lot of story but a lot in the way of options as well.
